Kenya Medical Plane Crash Kills Six After Ghana Helicopter Disaster
KIAMBU COUNTY, KENYA, AUG 7 – The crash killed all four on board, including the pilot and two medical crew, and two residents on the ground, with two others seriously injured, officials said.
- On August 7, 2025, AMREF Flying Doctors confirmed a medical evacuation aircraft crashed into a residential building near Nairobi, killing at least six people shortly after takeoff from Wilson Airport.
- Investigators have been dispatched to the scene to establish its cause, as AMREF Flying Doctors works closely with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority after radio contact was lost within minutes of takeoff.
- Rescue teams from the Kenya Red Cross and county emergency services sifted through wreckage, with Kiambu County commissioner Henry Wafula saying, 'We have lost four people, including the pilot... it was all fatal.'
- In a statement, AMREF CEO Stephen Gitau said AMREF is cooperating fully with aviation and emergency response teams to establish the facts and is prioritising support for affected families while asking for patience as the situation develops.
- This tragedy followed a fatal helicopter crash in Ghana that claimed eight lives, after a military helicopter crash in April 2024 killed Kenya’s defence chief and nine colleagues shortly after departure from the same airport.
