Amnesty Urges Probe Into Israeli Strike on Tehran Prison
TEHRAN PROVINCE, IRAN, JUL 21 – Amnesty International alleges Israeli air strikes on Evin prison killed at least 80 civilians and damaged multiple buildings, calling for an international war crime probe.
- On June 23, 2025, Israeli military carried out multiple air strikes on Evin prison in Tehran, hitting sites over 500 metres apart and damaging prison facilities and nearby homes, Amnesty International found.
- Under international humanitarian law a prison is presumed a civilian object, and no credible evidence shows Evin prison was a lawful military target, Amnesty International says.
- At least 80 civilians were killed according to Iranian authorities, with victims including staff and visitors, and a prisoner said `They are dropping bombs on us`.
- Amnesty International called for a war crimes investigation, while Erika Guevara Rosas said `Carrying out such attacks knowingly and deliberately constitutes a war crime`.
- Global legal experts could invoke universal jurisdiction to try suspects, and Amnesty International will publish further findings on hostilities.
