Amid immigration raids and emptying pews, the Nashville diocese is reminding faithful that they are not required to attend Mass if they fear for their well-being, according to the church’s own teaching and canon law.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detain a man who was in a vehicle stopped by the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) at a gas station south of Nashville because he could not provide any identification other than his expired driver's license. The man was detained during an operation conducted by ICE in conjunction with the THP to detain foreign nationals in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 10.
