Americans’ Top Fears for 2025, According to a Survey
The 2025 survey found 69.1% of Americans fear corrupt government officials, with top fears spanning health, economy, environment, and technology, based on 1,015 respondents.
- With 1,015 respondents, Chapman University released its 11th annual Survey of American Fears, conducted online by SSRS with a +/- 3.6% margin.
- For the second consecutive year, the Top 10 fears exceeded 50%, Chapman researcher Ed Day said this trend began after rapid increases from 2016 and was first seen in 2018.
- The Chapman ranking places 'People I Love Becoming Seriously Ill' at 58.9, 'Economic/Financial Collapse' at 58.2, and 'Cyber-Terrorism' at 55.9 in the complete 2025 ranked list.
- Drawing on social science, the Chapman research team urged facing fears through preparation, limiting media exposure, building social ties, and warned persistent fear harms decision-making and health.
- Surprisingly, overall fear of homeless people was low at 11.9%, while conservatives reported 44% fearing homeless tent encampments, compared with moderates at 29% and liberals at 22%.
