Amazon Drops €300m Investment on Energy Supply Concerns
COUNTY DUBLIN, IRELAND, JUL 25 – Amazon canceled a €300 million plant in northwest Dublin after failing to secure timely electricity, resulting in the loss of over 500 potential jobs, officials said.
On Friday, Amazon Web Services cancelled plans for a €300-million facility in Dublin’s Ballycoolin industrial zone, wiping out prospects for more than 500 jobs.
Amid constrained power networks, ESB Networks told Amazon there was no scope to connect the plant in time after negotiations for a 2027 hookup.
After receiving 2022 planning permission from Fingal County Council, the project was ready to proceed and covered 23,600 sqm with 562 parking spaces near the Meath border.
The facility's collapse underscores tension between digital expansion and grid capacity, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke said, adding he was acutely aware energy infrastructure access can hinder industrial investment.
Focusing on grid resilience, the government approved a €112 billion infrastructure plan through 2030 to tackle energy constraints in AI-era Europe.
