Chelsea's New Boss Alonso Demands Hunger and Passion Ahead of Premier League Campaign
Alonso said Chelsea must sharpen its playing identity and compete with more urgency after finishing 10th and missing European qualification.
On Monday, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said he wants "greater hunger and a desire to improve" from his players as he prepares for his first Premier League season. The club begins its campaign at Fulham on August 24.
Chelsea finished tenth last season following a trophyless campaign and failed to qualify for European competition. The club seeks stability after a turbulent year that saw former managers Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior depart.
Establishing a clear identity remains a priority for Alonso, who is managing squad reshaping. While he declined to discuss midfielder Enzo Fernandez's long-term future, he confirmed interest in winger Alejandro Garnacho from other clubs.
Chelsea sold Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos earlier on Monday while bringing in right back Marco Palestra from Serie A side Atalanta on a deal running until 2033.
"Small details, for sure, but the main focus for how we want to start in August does not change much," Alonso said. The Spaniard brings experience from managing Bayer Leverkusen and made 210 appearances for Liverpool.
