'Aloka the Peace Dog' Honored in Central Virginia as He Joins Monks on Walk for Peace
About 20 monks and their mascot dog have received public honors, pins, and community support as they promote unity and compassion during their 2,300-mile peace walk.
- On Feb. 2, 2026, Governor Abigail Spanberger proclaimed Walk for Peace Day as a group of 19 Buddhist monks marked Day 100 in Richmond, Virginia.
- They began their trek in Fort Worth, Texas, in October 2025, with monks from Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam walking 2,300 miles with Aloka the Peace Dog to promote unity and peace.
- Social media shows the mission's Facebook page tops 2.5 million followers and videos have over 100 million views, while thousands in Richmond greeted the monks, led by Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara.
- On Tuesday in Henrico County, Aloka the Peace Dog received a Henrico County Police pin and a badge from Henrico County Animal Protection, while Dinwiddie County Animal Control gave him a special pin and the Walk for Peace donated to Brunswick County Animal Shelter.
- With under 200 miles remaining, the monks still face harsh weather and prior injuries, and are expected to arrive in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 10 to visit the Washington National Cathedral before a meditation retreat.
