- Reports emerged on June 30 that Claude Code quietly checked proxy configurations against hidden lists of Chinese corporate networks, including Alibaba and Baidu. The detection mechanism reportedly altered system prompts to encode user identification upon finding a match.
- Anthropic previously accused operators linked to Alibaba's Qwen lab of running nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts. The campaign generated more than 28.8 million exchanges between April 22 and June 5 to extract Claude's capabilities.
- Thariq Shihipar, a Claude Code team member, stated the mechanism was "an experiment we launched in March that was meant to prevent account abuse." The company reportedly began removing the feature earlier this month.
- This dispute reflects a wider pattern of restrictions tech companies place on coding agents amid distillation fears. Anthropic has also tightened access for Chinese users through other tools, including Claude Opus and Fable models.
