Bill restricting hemp sales in Alabama signed by governor
- Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed legislation on Wednesday regulating hemp-derived edible products such as gummies and drinks in the state.
- The bill follows widespread growth of hemp-derived products and federal law distinctions but faces opposition from conservative groups and store owners.
- The law limits THC content in edibles to 10mg per serving, bans smokable products, requires retail licensing, and restricts sales to adults 21 and older.
- Bill sponsor Republican Rep. Andy Whitt said the law sets safeguards to protect children’s health, while critics say it will harm small businesses and legalize recreational marijuana.
- The new rules may reshape Alabama’s hemp product market, but debates continue as the medical marijuana program remains stalled and opponents urge a veto.
