Airbus, Indra, others offer Spain alternative to FCAS fighter jet project
Airbus says the new coalition will pursue a 6th-generation fighter with seven German partners and possible Spanish entrants after the FCAS plan was scrapped.
- On Wednesday, Airbus and seven German defense firms—Autofug, Diehl Defence, Hendsoldt, Liebherr, MBDA Germany, MTU Aero Engines, and Rhode and Schwarz—formed Team Gen 6 at the Berlin Air Show to lead a 6th-generation fighter project.
- German officials confirmed the overarching System of Systems development continues, while they will salvage the combat cloud and other technologies from the scrapped Next Generation Fighter program.
- Jean-Brice Dumout, head of airpower at Airbus Defence and Space, argued that existing technologies remain reusable with "a faster mindset" and demonstrated industrial feasibility to maintain momentum.
- German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius floated several procurement paths, including acquiring additional F-35 jets, joining the Global Combat Air Programme , or pursuing the Airbus-led Team Gen 6 initiative.
- Beyond the German firms, Airbus added that Spanish industrial interest is "forming up," with companies including Indra and ITP Aero potentially joining to broaden the initiative's European base.
