Airbnb adds direct messaging, new social features after app overhaul
Airbnb introduces messaging and profile-sharing features to boost social connections among experience attendees, aiming to increase bookings and user engagement, company officials said.
- This year, Airbnb announced social features that let guests at Experiences message other attendees within the Airbnb app.
- With a strategy to expand beyond rentals, Airbnb pursued Experiences and new services after pausing growth in 2020, following the May app redesign and up to 250 million in investments.
- When you book an Experience, a pop-up asks users to share a photo, name and origin, and the Airbnb app’s Connections tab offers blocking, reporting and community safety team review.
- Alongside the rollout, Airbnb says increased interaction could boost bookings for properties and Experiences, but chat features may face moderation issues handled by the community team.
- Search and maps updates will include new search carousels and a Maps view showing landmarks, attractions and restaurants, while the AI-powered assistant expands to Mexico and Canada with English, Spanish and French support.
