Typhoon Fung-Wong Kills 25 as Rescuers Dig Through Devastation
Typhoon Fung-Wong caused 25 deaths mainly from landslides and flooding, with recovery expected to take weeks, officials said.
- On Nov 11, national civil defence deputy administrator Rafaelito Alejandro reported the death toll climbed to 25 as rescuers used backhoes and chainsaws to dig out flooded villages.
- Up to 400mm of rain is expected over the next 24 hours, government and weather officials said, as the northeast monsoon intensified with Typhoon Fung-wong.
- Nineteen deaths were recorded in the Cordillera mountain range, a 10-year-old boy died in Nueva Vizcaya, and a town of 6,000 in coastal Isabela remained cut off on Nov 11.
- Officials said early recovery will take weeks as access problems and landslides slow relief, with restoring roads, power and communication lines the greatest challenge and water supply repairs on Catanduanes island taking up to 20 days.
- It was the second major typhoon in days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed 232 people, while Fung-wong weakened but approached Taiwan for a Nov 12 landfall.
