After Durga Puja, now India's Deepavali inscribed on UNESCO’S Intangible Cultural Heritage list

  • UNESCO announced on December 10, 2025 that Deepavali has been added to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, finalised during the Intergovernmental Committee session at Delhi's Red Fort.
  • Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is one of India’s most widely celebrated festivals symbolising light’s triumph over darkness and fits UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage definition; India also nominated Chhath Mahaparv.
  • At the session venue, delegates greeted Deepavali's inscription with applause and chants of `Vande Mataram` and `Bharat Mata ki Jai` as Vishal V. Sharma chairs the December 8 to 13 session.
  • Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat called the development 'historic' and 'a matter of pride,' while Indian officials and commentators said the inscription sparked nationwide pride and underscored India's cultural leadership.
  • This year India is hosting the Intergovernmental Committee annual meeting for the first time, placing Deepavali among traditions like Kumbh Mela, Garba, yoga, and Durga Puja already recognised by UNESCO.
