Advocacy group sues Trump administration over access to abortion for veterans
The group says the rule strips veterans of abortion care and counseling, and the VA changed course without medical evidence, according to the lawsuit.
On Thursday, attorneys for Minority Veterans filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging the Department of Veterans Affairs' decision to reinstate a near-ban on abortion for veterans and their families.
Finalized on Dec 31, the rule reversed policy established under President Joe Biden that allowed abortion access when a pregnant woman's health was at risk or in cases of rape or incest.
The lawsuit argues the Department violated the Administrative Procedures Act by adopting the change without sufficient medical evidence, citing an unnamed veteran with chronic pain exacerbated by pregnancy.
Executive Director Lindsay Church, representing more than 3,600 members, stated the community includes veterans with complex medical histories who "need access to abortion care and counseling to protect their health."
Attorneys are asking the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to overturn the rule, though a Department of Veterans Affairs spokesperson declined to comment on the pending litigation.
A defense group filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump's government for its decision to reinstate an almost total abortion ban for veterans and their family members who report to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (abbreviated VA) for medical care.
