MEXICO CITY ― Sportswear giant Adidas apologized to an Indigenous community in Mexico on Thursday for using their traditional sandals as inspiration for a new design, after an outcry by officials and President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Villa Hidalgo Yalálag, Oax., The company of German origin Adidas acknowledged yesterday that the traditional Yalalag huarache was used for the Oaxaca Slip On model, which was created by Chicano designer Willy Chavarría. The company’s legal and compliance director, Karen González, offered a public apology to the assembly of the Zapotec community and reported that the product has not yet been commercialized.
