US busts ring accused of arranging hundreds of sham marriages in Massachusetts
Prosecutors say the ring arranged hundreds of fake weddings and collected more than $6 million while helping immigrants seek legal status.
On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley announced charges against six individuals for operating an alleged marriage fraud ring spanning over a decade and generating more than $6 million in profits.
Jennifer Gonzalez, the alleged mastermind, reportedly charged between $38,000 and $40,000 per marriage while facilitating 18 to 20 arrangements annually, a process Foley described as "a very sophisticated operation."
Prosecutors allege Gonzalez also received approximately $124,500 in SNAP benefits between 2019 and 2026 without reporting income from the marriage business; court documents identify the other five charged individuals as Fall River residents.
"It is alleged Ms. Gonzalez got rich by selling the American dream," Foley stated during the announcement, as federal authorities confirmed the investigation remains active to hold co-conspirators accountable.
The scheme involved foreign nationals marrying U.S. citizens to secure immigration benefits unlawfully, according to prosecutors, who learned of the operation after an individual came forward to tip off federal authorities.
