'A Woman of Substance': Channel 4 Hit Drama Renewed for Season 2
The eight-episode follow-up will continue Emma Harte’s story into the 1920s after the drama drew an average of 3 million viewers per episode, Channel 4 said.
On Monday, Channel 4 announced the renewal of A Woman of Substance for a second season, following the drama's significant streaming success.
Starring Brenda Blethyn and Jessica Reynolds as older and younger versions of Emma Harte, the series adapts novels by the late Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE.
The adaptation recently became Channel 4's most-streamed drama since It's a Sin, drawing an average audience of 3 million viewers per episode, Channel 4 said.
Filming will resume in Yorkshire later this year, with the new series following Harte into the 1920s while she battles Jim Fairley to reclaim her work.
Though the 2026 series resonates with audiences, the 1984 original starring actress Jenny Seagrove remains the most-watched, drawing 14 million viewers 42 years ago.
