‘A real obligation’: Leafs GM John Chayka reflects on hectic off-season ahead of camp
Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka enters his first training camp Wednesday, aiming to 'get some momentum and wind in the sails' after the organization's last-place Atlantic Division finish.
Following a playoff-less campaign, the club underwent a wide purge, firing head coach Craig Berube and parting ways with four assistant GMs, including Hayley Wickenheiser, to address team struggles.
The team added Cup-winning goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky and defenceman Darren Raddysh under new head coach Jim Hiller, while securing winger Gavin McKenna in the draft lottery.
Toronto needs Auston Matthews to regain form after campaigns totaling 60 goals hampered by MCL injuries; Chayka said 'sometimes an injury like that allows you to get dialled in and focused.'
Chayka emphasized that earning fan support requires consistent effort over time, stating 'it's our obligation to earn that love' through sustained performance rather than immediate results.
