Gavin McKenna Scores and the Maple Leafs End a 3-Game Slide with 3-1 Win over the Sharks
McKenna scored the tiebreaking goal on a power play, and Auston Matthews added a goal and two assists as Toronto ended a three-game skid.
On Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 at Scotiabank Arena, snapping a three-game losing streak. Rookie winger Gavin McKenna scored the go-ahead power-play goal at 4:56 of the third period.
Former Leafs winger Mason Marchment gave San Jose a 1-0 lead early, but captain Auston Matthews tied the game with 12 seconds left in the second period on a power play. Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves to secure his first home win for Toronto.
Sharks center Michael Misa returned to his hometown for the contest, saying, "Obviously you circle Toronto on the schedule." Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov finished with 28 saves, including three while shorthanded.
The Maple Leafs visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night to face Matthew Knies, while the Sharks continue their road trip against the Montreal Canadiens. Both teams play Tuesday.
Toronto entered the game with the NHL's top-ranked penalty kill at 96.4 per cent, which proved decisive against San Jose's power-play struggles. Defenseman Luca Cagnoni returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch Saturday, paired with Dmitry Orlov.
