A new chapter: University of Victoria’s moving day welcomes 3,000 students

The University of Victoria welcomed more than 3,000 students, including 2,400 newcomers, to residence from September 6 to 7. The move-in marks the beginning of the academic year for undergraduates arriving from across the country.
UVic director of residence services Brett Zawadiuk and his team spent seven months preparing for the move-in. The university operates more than 2,800 beds in single-student housing, along with nearly 200 students and families in dedicated family units.
Among the new arrivals, Joseph Golbey from Vancouver began undergraduate psychology studies, while Mercedes Howe drove in from Alberta to pursue a business degree. Both expressed enthusiasm about meeting new people and experiencing campus life away from home.
Sarah noted a "big hole" in her home with her daughter's departure, while Golbey's parents expressed pride in their son as a role model for his two younger brothers. The transition highlighted both the emotional weight and family significance of the move.
As school begins, Zawadiuk advised students to "lean into the experience," noting the abundance of campus support available. With staff on-site throughout the transition, he encouraged newcomers to get engaged, make friends, and embrace their time on campus.
