Human remains found inside the recovered 1963 Buick are believed to be Roy Benn, missing since 1967, offering potential closure to a decades-old cold case, officials said.
- During Tuesday's dive, the Stearns-Benton County Sheriff's Office Dive Team recovered a fairly intact 1960s-era Buick from the Mississippi River near Riverside Avenue in Sartell, believed to contain human remains tied to a 1967 missing person case.
- During the weekend sonar scan, a fisherman from Watkins, Minnesota, reported an anomaly on Aug. 10, prompting a dive on Wednesday, Aug. 13, that located it around 10 a.m.
- Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigators found human remains inside the vehicle, matching its Vehicle Identification Number to Roy George Benn’s 1963 Buick Electra, suspected to be his.
- Authorities say the case remains under investigation; the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will receive the remains for identification and cause of death.
- With the sheriff’s office leading the probe, Brody Loch and local law enforcement officials hope the discovery brings answers to Benn’s family.
