Two Injured in Explosion at Fireworks Factory in Malta, Police Say
Police said the blast at Ta' Lourdes fireworks factory sent smoke and debris into the air and left no workers inside at the time.
On Monday, a powerful explosion rocked the Lourdes fireworks factory on the north side of the Mediterranean island of Malta, sending a massive plume of smoke and debris into the air.
A first blast occurred at about 6:35 am, followed by a second powerful one, while other small explosions continued hours later according to the Times and Malta Today.
Nearby resident Edward Mercieca said the blast felt like a hammer hitting his house, noting, "The plume of smoke must have been a thousand feet high."
Two men working in nearby fields suffered minor injuries, though no workers were inside the Lourdes factory when the explosions occurred, Authorities confirmed.
Prime Minister Robert Abela, whose Labour party secured an unprecedented fourth term on Saturday, wrote on social media that his "thoughts are with the people affected by the explosion that occurred this morning.
