New Mexico mom charged with murder after son, 10, fatally shoots teen in loud music dispute
Police say the mother told her 10-year-old son to get a handgun, and he fired the shot that killed a 16-year-old neighbor.
On Sunday, authorities charged 40-year-old Elaina Gomez-Villeda with murder after her 10-year-old son fatally shot 16-year-old Keinerlein Rangel during a Saturday altercation at an Albuquerque apartment complex.
A dispute over loud music escalated into a physical fight Saturday outside the residence, where Gomez-Villeda confronted neighbors installing a security camera above their apartment door.
According to the criminal complaint, Gomez-Villeda allegedly instructed her 10-year-old son to retrieve her handgun during the fight. The boy returned and fired once, killing the teen.
Following the shooting, Gomez-Villeda retreated inside and called 911, telling dispatchers she had been "jumped." She texted her husband, "I'm probably going to jail right now," then surrendered to police.
The 10-year-old remains uncharged due to his age, while detectives work with the 2nd Judicial District Attorney's Office to determine potential charges as the investigation continues.
