Suspect in Killings of Oberlin Professor, Wife Held on $3 Million Bond

Police say the suspect was taken into custody without incident after a welfare check uncovered two bodies and a $3 million bond was set.

  • On Thursday, 31-year-old Ashland resident Daniel Jones appeared in court charged with the double homicide of his father, Pipo Nguyen-Duy, and stepmother, Tran Thi Phong, in Oberlin, Ohio. A judge set his bond at $3 million.
  • Police discovered the two victims dead from multiple gunshot wounds at their South Pleasant Street home on Wednesday morning, shortly after officers responded to a vehicle fire at the Oberlin College campus. Jones was located at a nearby resident's home.
  • Prosecutor Zachary Simonoff said in court that Jones identified himself as Asia Nguyen-Duy, claimed he was "escaping a cult," and admitted he "killed his family." Officers found two people dead from gunshot wounds with blood throughout the house, Simonoff said.
  • Oberlin College President Carmen Twillie Ambar released a statement mourning the "devastating loss" of Nguyen-Duy, a professor of studio art and photography since 1998. The case will be presented to a grand jury in Lorain County Common Pleas Court.
  • While the motive remains under investigation, Simonoff noted police contacted Jones' mother in Oregon, who stated her son is "psychotic and needs medication." Jones did not enter a plea on Thursday and bore visible facial and hand injuries.
