‘A damn lot of luck’: How three Victorian towns were spared by unstoppable fires

Volunteers and farmers helped contain fires that destroyed 86 homes and 32,000 hectares under extreme conditions with a fire index reaching 480, the highest on record in Victoria.

The fires that savaged the Victorian towns of Natimuk, Harcourt and Streatham were unlike any the towns had seen before, victims and firefighters said.
