- SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi opened the Ordinary Meeting of the SADC Council of Ministers in Durban on Wednesday, urging the region to build resilience against global instability through deeper unity and self-reliance.
- Global conflicts, economic uncertainty and declining development assistance are forcing SADC to reconsider its development approach and rely more on regional cooperation than external support, Magosi said.
- The region added more than 4,800 megawatts of generation capacity in the past year, while Internet penetration rose to 57.2% and mobile penetration exceeded 95%, though electricity access remains at 60% against an 85% target by 2030.
- Ahead of Zambia's General Elections on Thursday, Magosi expressed solidarity with the electoral process; separately, the SADC Protocol on Facilitation of Movement of Persons requires 11 ratifications to enter force, with only seven completed.
- Magosi cited forecasts of a severe El Niño event in 2026/27 as a test of regional preparedness, urging Ministers to shift from reactive disaster response to proactive resilience through early warning systems and climate-resilient infrastructure.
