Election 2026: Luxon Faces Hipkins in First Leaders' Debate
Undecided voters said Hipkins outperformed Chris Luxon on cost-of-living and tax questions in a combative debate that drew mixed analyst reactions.
On Tuesday, New Zealand Labour leader Chris Hipkins edged Prime Minister Chris Luxon in the first election debate, with undecided voters declaring Hipkins the winner of the combative matchup.
Cost of living concerns dominated the debate, forcing both leaders to defend their fiscal plans and respond to attacks regarding unfunded promises as the central election issue.
Luxon emphasized education and tax pledges with "no new taxes" on Kiwis, while Hipkins pressed the Prime Minister on his failure to address alleged "racist" comments from Winston Peters and Shane Jones.
Post-Debate polling revealed 49% of undecided voters favored Hipkins, compared to 24% for Luxon, with 27% remaining undecided following the performance.
Both leaders face another challenge next week, when they meet for a second debate moderated by Ryan Bridge for the Herald and Three.
