86 arrests after protesters breach Wormwood Scrubs prison grounds holding Palestine Action-linked activist
Eighty-six protesters were arrested for aggravated trespass after breaching prison grounds and blocking staff, police said, during a demonstration supporting a hunger and thirst striking prisoner.
- On Saturday the Metropolitan Police detained a group who had breached the grounds of HMP Wormwood Scrubs prison, west London, arresting a total of 86 people after they refused orders to leave.
- Prisoners for Palestine campaign group identified Muhammad Umer Khalid, who restarted a hunger strike 15 days ago and began an extremely dangerous thirst strike on Friday.
- Footage showed protesters chanting and moving toward prison buildings, with some reaching a staff entrance area, while police vans arrived after around 30 minutes and kettled the crowd at about 10pm.
- A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said `at no point was prison security compromised` and prisoners are managed with regular medical checks, monitoring, and hospital care if needed.
- According to messenger channels run by protest groups, arrests were still continuing as of 11:30pm, with journalists detained including Canary videographer Ibrahim Abul-Essad, while Prisoners for Palestine earlier reported at least 20 arrests.
