85-Year-Old French Widow Caught in Trump's Immigration Crackdown Describes Her Detention
Ross says guards shouted constantly and 58 women shared her dormitory-style room before she was released and returned to France.
On Monday, Marie-Therese Ross-Mahe recounted her 16 days in United States immigration custody after her April 1 arrest in Alabama on an alleged 90-day visa overstay. She was released and returned to France.
Following a dispute over her late husband William's estate, five men arrested Ross; her stepson, a United States federal employee, allegedly intervened to prompt her placement in immigration custody.
In a dormitory-style room in Basile, Louisiana, Ross was held with 58 other women. The facility was noisy; the silence of night was shattered by cries of children.
The French foreign minister publicly called for her release, stating that United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement methods are "not in line" with French standards. Ross has since returned to Orvault, France.
Reflecting on the experience, Ross noted "some of them didn't know where their children were." She keeps a handmade friendship bracelet given by another detainee, a gift she wears today.
