- A lower court initially imposed a fine of about 3,600 lei, but prosecutors from DIICOT appealed and the Constanța Court of Appeal reversed the fine, ruling a custodial sentence was warranted under Romanian law.
- It remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will seek extradition, and Khalifa's legal team is appealing the sentence while Mr Zaha said it is highly unlikely he will serve prison in Constanța.
- Under Romanian law, cannabis is classified as a 'dangerous drug' and possession remains criminal, contrasting with decriminalization moves in Germany, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and parts of the United States.
