Sydney's new international airport opens to passengers
Jetstar’s inaugural flight sold out in 45 minutes as the new airport begins 24-hour operations and adds capacity for 10 million passengers a year.
On Sunday, October 25, Western Sydney International Airport opened to commercial passengers in a A$5.6 billion project, marking a milestone for Australia's most populous city.
Located on a 1,780-hectare site in Badgerys Creek, the facility was completed in July 2025 after 15 years of planning and a seven-year build.
Operating 24 hours a day, the airport has capacity for more than 80 million passenger movements annually, with Qantas and Jetstar launching commercial services.
Positioned about 60 km west of central Sydney, the new hub provides 24-hour scheduling flexibility, unlike the current airport that restricts operations between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted, "For the first time in more than 50 years, Australia is opening a major new airport," serving a fast-growing, ethnically diverse population centre in Western Sydney.
