Australian Coroner Moved to Tears by the Death of a Child Denied Insulin on Religious Grounds
Coroner Ainslie Kirkegaard will recommend changes after evidence that 14 congregation members prayed as Elizabeth Struhs died without insulin.
On Thursday, Jayde Struhs gave an emotional statement on the final day of an eight-day coroner's inquiry in Brisbane into the death of her 8-year-old sister, Elizabeth Struhs.
Elizabeth died from ketoacidosis in 2022 after her father, Jason Struhs, withheld insulin for her type-1 diabetes, prompting manslaughter convictions for her parents, brother, and 11 other religious group members last year.
Reflecting on a sister denied ordinary experiences, Jayde said, "Having Elizabeth in our lives is something we would have loved." She had fled the family in 2014 at age 16, rejecting their religious views.
Coroner Ainslie Kirkegaard was moved to tears, thanking Jayde for her recollections and noting she will make recommendations to the state government to prevent similar deaths.
The 14 members of the congregation, which called itself the "Saints," gathered around Elizabeth as she lay dying, believing God would heal her without medical help, consistent with their rejection of modern medicine.
