Helen Haines's Condition Has Improved, Hospital Says
Police say the investigation is ongoing and more charges, including attempted murder, may be laid as questions grow over violence against women in public life.
On Saturday, The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne reported that injured MP Helen Haines is in "serious but stable" condition after sustaining critical injuries on Monday when struck by a vehicle outside her Wangaratta electorate office.
Police charged 43-year-old Tarrawingee man Brendan Nugent with intentionally causing serious injury after he allegedly drove his Toyota LandCruiser into Haines on Monday. Nugent's lawyer cited "mental health concerns" while investigators continue probing the motive.
Donations totaling more than $1 million have been made to Save the Children Australia in honour of Haines. Wangaratta barber Ricky Jefferies said, "I know the whole community will get a lot of joy hearing that."
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned of a "rise in temperature" and "too much shouting, not enough discourse" in Australia shortly after the attack. The incident triggered national dialogue on hostility toward women in public life, with former ACTU secretary Sally McManus sharing her own experiences of threats.
Data from Australian Femicide Watch shows 56 women have lost their lives to violence in 2026, while Chief Executive Women head Lisa Annese warns such hostility discourages public service. Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities consider laying further charges.
