Government Announces $50 Million Loans to Install More EV Chargers
The government’s $52.7 million zero-interest loans will co-fund 2,574 new EV chargers, more than doubling public infrastructure to about 4,550 nationwide.
- Today ministers said the New Zealand Government announced $52.7 million in zero-interest loans to ChargeNet and Meridian Energy to more than double public EV chargers to around 4,550.
- Transport Minister Chris Bishop said it was a chicken and egg situation, with about 1800 public charge points, among the lowest in the OECD, and 'Many New Zealanders have thought about getting an EV, even before the fuel challenges we're currently facing.'
- The scheme uses a contestable procurement process, with ChargeNet and Meridian Energy co-investing NZD 110 million alongside loans, and officials said the average loan per charge point is $20,000.
- About half the new chargers will be spread across Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, the Wellington region, Christchurch, and Dunedin, with 161 charge points in progress, and dealers report sales up at least half in Christchurch and 30% in Auckland, while inquiries have tripled in recent weeks, said Bishop.
- Advocates called for additional policies, with Kirsten Corston warning that $52m is small compared to earlier promises and urging reductions in road user charges.
