Thousands join Indian opposition protest demanding poll chief's resignation
Police deployed about 3,500 personnel and 200 to 250 CCTV cameras as the opposition pressed its demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
On Sunday, November 1, 2026, the INDIA bloc held a massive "Chalo Dilli" protest rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over alleged electoral irregularities.
Opposition parties organized the demonstration to protest the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision process, which removed over 130 million names from voter lists, alleging the purge disproportionately affects minority voters to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party .
Thousands of supporters participated in the "Chalo Dilli" march from Minto Road to the venue, while Delhi Police deployed over 4,000 security personnel and more than 200 CCTV cameras for surveillance.
Simultaneously, the BJP organized a counter-march in West Delhi to commemorate 1984 anti-Sikh riots, criticizing the opposition for scheduling on that painful anniversary while local traders expressed concerns over business disruptions.
The standoff reflects deepening political crisis as opposition parties demand electoral reforms and EVM replacement, while the Election Commission maintains the revision process removes duplicate and deceased voters as routine practice.
After the delisting of approximately 130 million Indian voters, denounced as discriminatory by the opposition and NGOs, a new demonstration was held in New Delhi on Sunday to request the departure of the head of the electoral commission.
