4 years running, Southern Baptists weigh tightening ban on churches with women pastors
Albert Mohler’s proposal would bar churches that affirm women as pastors, as Southern Baptists revisit a rule that failed to win a two-thirds vote in three years.
- More than 11,000 Southern Baptist Convention representatives gathered in Orlando on Tuesday for a two-day meeting to debate whether to formally ban churches with women serving in any pastoral role.
- During previous annual meetings, representatives voted to amend the SBC constitution to ban churches with women in any pastoral role, but measures failed to secure the required two-thirds supermajority.
- Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, proposed an amendment this year to exclude any church that acts to endorse a woman serving as pastor, elder, or overseer.
- Outgoing SBC president Clint Pressley and both candidates running to succeed him support the amendment, which empowers the denomination to expel churches deemed not in "friendly cooperation."
- The SBC remains a core part of the evangelical constituency that coalesced behind Trump in 2020 and 2024, even as internal statistics show a continuation of a nearly two-decade-long decline in membership.
