Boy, 4, Fatally Shoots 2-Year-Old After Finding Gun in Car on Family Vacation, Sheriff Says

The sheriff’s office said the family was visiting from Georgia and investigators are treating the case as a homicide, with charges possible.

  • On Sunday, a 4-year-old boy visiting from Georgia accidentally shot and killed a 2-year-old relative inside a vehicle in Kissimmee, Florida. Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon confirmed the children were unsupervised when the older child found an unsecured, unholstered handgun.
  • The family had just arrived at their Airbnb rental home on Scrapbook Street for vacation when the children were left alone in the car. Officials confirmed Tuesday that the handgun belonged to the toddler's mother.
  • During a Monday news conference, Blackmon stated criminal charges are possible as the investigation continues. He urged gun safety, saying, "If it can save one life, it's worth that investment to us."
  • Nearly 340 children under 11 have been killed or injured by gunfire in the United States this year, with 32 incidents in Florida. Firearm injuries remain the leading cause of death for children under 18 nationwide.
  • This tragedy marks the second incident in Osceola County in the past three months involving a young child accessing an unsecured firearm. Similar accidents occurred in Central Florida earlier this year, including a 3-year-old shooting in April.
