31 workers have been safely removed after part of an industrial tunnel in LA collapsed
WILMINGTON NEIGHBORHOOD, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, JUL 10 – All 31 trapped workers were rescued without serious injuries after a partial tunnel collapse during construction of a $700 million wastewater project, officials said.
- On July 9, 2025, 31 workers were safely extracted following the collapse of an underground tunnel being built in Los Angeles’ Wilmington neighborhood.
- The collapse occurred about five to six miles from the sole tunnel entry point, trapping workers who climbed over 12 to 15 feet of loose soil to reach safety.
- Over a hundred firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department, including Urban Search and Rescue units, employed cranes and rescue cages to safely evacuate the workers, all of whom showed no visible injuries.
- Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated, "What we found was victory," and Interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva said, "Tonight, we were lucky," highlighting the successful rescue.
- Officials announced that OSHA will investigate the cause of the collapse, emphasizing the risks in such infrastructure projects and the need for safety review.
