3 Customers Suffer Chemical Burns From Margaritas with Cleaning Products at Chili's in North Carolina
Three customers and two employees suffered chemical burns after a cleaning agent was mistaken for sugar in margaritas, officials said.
On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the Foothills Health District suspended the food service permit at a Chili's Grill & Bar in Forest City, North Carolina, after three customers suffered chemical burns from margaritas prepared with a cleaning agent mistakenly identified as sugar.
Preliminary information indicates that on Monday, Oct. 26, an employee placed a "granulated degreasing chemical" obtained from a contractor power-washing the building into an unlabeled container left in the bar area.
Three customers "immediately experienced discomfort" and sought medical care, while two restaurant employees also suffered similar symptoms. Customer Levonne Baker described the incident as a "Wes Craven story that's coming to life."
Foothills Health District spokesperson Megan Rollins confirmed environmental health specialists reinstated the restaurant's food service permit on Thursday, Oct. 29, after determining it met "all applicable food safety requirements" following sanitation.
Health officials emphasize proper chemical labeling in workplaces to prevent accidental exposure. Anyone experiencing symptoms from suspected chemical contact can reach Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance on neutralizing hazards.
