Japan demands release of national in meeting with Russia's Lavrov
Japan said Motegi urged Russia to free a detained national as the two sides held a rare G20 meeting amid strained ties over Ukraine.
On Friday, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the G20 sidelines in Atlanta and demanded the release of a Japanese national detained in Russia's Sakhalin region.
Tensions between the two nations have worsened in recent months after Russia labeled Japan "unfriendly" following Tokyo's decision to join Western sanctions against Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
Russia detained a Japanese journalist in Sakhalin this month on suspicion of espionage, adding friction to the rare high-level meeting held at Japan's request during the G20 summit.
Motegi issued a demarche regarding various issues, while the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that dialogue resumption requires Tokyo to give up "unfriendly" policies toward Moscow.
The two countries have yet to sign a World War Two peace treaty due to a long-running territorial dispute over the Kuril Islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories.
