3 billionaires give Republican Tom Tiffany a big cash boost in the Wisconsin governor’s race
Three donors provided about 93% of the state GOP’s individual fundraising, helping Tiffany build a $26.3 million war chest, reports said.
Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany raised over $26 million in the latest reporting period, dominating Democratic opponent David Crowley in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race. The influx gives Tiffany a significant financial advantage heading into the November 3 election.
A 2015 state law allows unlimited contributions to political parties, enabling Tiffany to receive about $24 million in transfers from the Wisconsin Republican Party. This reliance on three megadonors for the majority of his funding is unprecedented in state history.
Fueled by contributions from Diane Hendricks, Richard Uihlein, and Elizabeth Uihlein, Tiffany has launched a $40 million ad blitz. Crowley raised $10.2 million, as the candidates compete to succeed Governor Tony Evers in the open race.
In a statement, Crowley claimed the billionaires are "trying to buy Wisconsin's governor office" for Tiffany. Responding to the criticism, Tiffany's campaign retorted that Crowley is "fully embracing an agenda of higher taxes."
Despite being significantly outspent, a recent Marquette University Law School Poll shows the race remains tight among registered voters. The election concludes November 3, marking the state's first open gubernatorial contest in 16 years.
