US Aquariums to Rescue 28 Beluga Whales From Canada's Marineland
SeaWorld and other accredited aquariums will receive the whales after Canadian officials and NOAA cleared the transfer, which could take several weeks.
On Wednesday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration authorized the emergency relocation of 30 beluga whales from the shuttered Marineland of Canada to accredited aquariums in the United States and Europe.
Marineland, which closed in 2024, warned federal officials last year that financial struggles left it unable to provide long-term care, suggesting euthanasia might become necessary without relocation approval.
According to CBC, 28 whales will transfer to four accredited U.S. facilities: Georgia Aquarium, Shedd Aquarium, SeaWorld San Diego, and SeaWorld San Antonio, while the remaining two whales will go to aquariums in Spain.
Dedicated animal care teams from SeaWorld will soon travel to Canada to assess the whales' health, and once Canadian veterinarians clear the animals, staff will accompany them to their new homes during the multi-week operation.
This rescue follows the Canadian government's rejection of a proposal to send the whales to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China, and the transfer complies with a 2019 law forbidding whale captivity for entertainment, though it excludes existing populations.
Beluga whales from Canada, which were at risk of being euthanized, will find a new home. The animals will be transferred to aquariums in the United States and Spain. Experts explained that relocating them will be complicated.
