2027: Nobody should trust INEC deployment of technology

INEC highlights network and logistics challenges affecting real-time electronic result transmission and calls for simpler Electoral Act language to improve voter understanding.

  • At a Citizens' Townhall in Abuja on Sunday, INEC warned it cannot guarantee a 100 percent perfect election in 2027 regarding electronic transmission of results.
  • Because of past problems with the IREV system, INEC noted the 2023 IREV glitch is eliminated but devices tested in Osun and Ekiti were not stress-tested for interstate presidential transmission, with Amupitan citing network adequacy, logistics and human factors.
  • Using a 50,000₦ app-transfer analogy, INEC noted delays in results: five area councils reported on time, but Kabi ward's result came the next day, Sunday.
  • Calling for clearer law, Amupitan also expressed confidence that by the grace of God the 2027 presidential election will be the best in Nigeria's history.
  • On the legal front, INEC recalled it had considered mandating transmission and noted Section 63 of the Electoral Act serves as protection if electronic transmission fails, ensuring results must still be transmitted.
