20 new measles cases confirmed in Upstate, three hospitalized
- On Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Public Health reported 20 new measles cases, raising the Upstate outbreak to 165 and the statewide total to 179.
- Driven largely by unvaccinated children and household spread, DPH said 165 of 176 cases were unvaccinated, with transmission ongoing in households, schools and churches among children ages 5 to 17.
- There are currently 287 people in quarantine and two in isolation, with the latest quarantine period ending on Jan. 21, and DPH said three people required hospitalization for measles complications.
- DPH urges exposed people to contact a health care provider before seeking care, vaccines are available at primary-care offices, pharmacies and DPH health departments, and employers are asked to support workers during illness or quarantine.
