‘Apocalyptic’ Turkey wildfires spread as 14 killed in blazes sparked by record 50C heatwave
TURKEY, JUL 27 – Turkey faced its highest temperature ever at 50.5°C as wildfires forced 1,700 people to evacuate Bursa, with over 1,900 firefighters deployed to battle the blazes, officials said.
- Early Wednesday, firefighters reported a blaze breaking out near Cavuslar village in Karabuk district, engulfing surrounding forests.
- Unusually high temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds have fueled wildfires across Turkey, with 61 major fires in 15 provinces between July 4 and 22.
- On Sunday, the Bursa governor’s office said it had evacuated 1,765 people, supported by six planes and four helicopters battling the flames.
- The highway linking Bursa to Ankara was closed as forests burned, and Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli warned, `We are going through risky times`.
