CAIRO GOVERNORATE, EGYPT, JUL 10 – China and Egypt agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, technology, infrastructure, energy, and defense, with bilateral trade reaching $17 billion, officials said.
- Chinese Premier Li Qiang concluded a two-day visit to Cairo on Thursday, meeting President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to deepen Egypt-China ties.
- The visit followed Li's attendance at the 17th BRICS summit and comes as China and Egypt seek to expand cooperation amid Middle East tensions including the Gaza conflict.
- During talks, both sides emphasized growing economic links through the Belt and Road Initiative, infrastructure investment, and enhancing Chinese bank presence in Egypt.
- Annual bilateral trade between China and Egypt is around $14 billion, highlighted by Chinese involvement in significant projects such as Africa’s tallest skyscraper and Egypt’s inaugural electric light rail. Additionally, the Egyptian Tourism Authority reported that in 2023, tens of thousands of visitors from China traveled to Egypt.
- The strengthened partnership signals China’s aim to expand regional influence and support Egypt’s development, including efforts to help resolve the Palestinian crisis and boost priority sectors like renewable energy.
