Clashes Linked to a Land Dispute Kill 18 in North-Central Nigeria, Police Say
Police said 18 people have died in the violence as investigators search for suspects and joint patrols work to stop further attacks.
At least 18 people have died in clashes between rival communities in Rafi Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria, police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said on Thursday following fresh attacks earlier this week.
Violence linked to a lingering land dispute between two tribes escalated between Monday and Wednesday, involving gun attacks and arson in Angwan-Baago that killed 15 people in a single house fire.
The crisis began Monday when armed men killed 25-year-old Ibrahim Musa in Godoro village, triggering a reprisal by the local vigilante group Yan Sakai that allegedly killed 28-year-old Bashir Mazi.
Tegina resident Ibrahim Sani claimed the death toll was 56, contradicting the official police count, while locals reported hundreds have fled the area amid the ongoing violence.
Joint police and military patrols have deployed to restore order, while a reconciliation committee led by Rafi Local Government Council officials works with community leaders to address underlying causes.
