14 people killed near Congo’s capital as violence over land intensifies

The Mobondo militia, claiming to protect the Yaka people, killed 14 including three children and displaced thousands amid a three-year land dispute, IPIS reported.

  • On Monday, Capt. Antony Mualushayi said an early-Sunday assault on Nkana village, Kwamouth territory, killed 14 people as attackers exchanged fire with soldiers and set homes ablaze.
  • A fight over land and customary claims erupted in June 2022, Human Rights Watch says, pitting the Teke, historical inhabitants, against so-called non-native groups including Yaka farmers.
  • The military said the attackers were the Mobondo militia presenting themselves as defenders of the Yaka people, and the United Nations reports Mobondo militiamen have killed in five provinces around Kinshasa.
  • Researchers at International Peace Information Service found the conflict has killed more than 5,000 people and displaced 280,000 since 2022.
  • Nkana is in Kwamouth territory where fighting has raged for three years amid repeated clashes over land and customary disputes between local communities.
