Japan lifts tsunami advisories after powerful earthquake off northern coast

A 7.5 magnitude quake off Aomori triggered tsunami warnings and evacuations for 90,000 residents, with the largest wave recorded at 70 cm, officials said.

  • On Monday, a preliminary 7.6-magnitude quake struck northeastern Japan at 11:15 p.m. near Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, and Tokyo Electric Power Company halted Fukushima Daiichi wastewater discharge at 11:42 p.m. after tsunami warnings.
  • Tsunami warnings were issued then adjusted to advisories as forecasts evolved, with the Japan Meteorological Agency warning of potential surges up to 3 meters in Aomori, Iwate and Hokkaido.
  • Transport and utilities were disrupted, halting Tohoku Shinkansen bullet trains and causing power outages for around 2,700 homes, while the Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported 23 injuries, including one serious.
  • The government opened a crisis management office at the Prime Minister's Office and dispatched an emergency task force, while the International Atomic Energy Agency said Tokyo reported all nuclear sites including Fukushima Daiichi operating normally.
  • Officials warned that aftershocks could persist for a week and urged local governments and residents in affected coastal areas to remain vigilant despite lifted tsunami advisories.
