A trip marked by ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, with Orthodox in Turkey and Muslims in Lebanon. Still, the ceremonies of the Restoration of Independence have already begun.
The first foreign trip of the reserved, cautious Pope Leo XIV, who rarely and carefully spoke on foreign policy issues, attracted special attention. His visit to Turkey and Lebanon six months after his election in May is significant in itself: he preached reconciliation between Christianity and Islam, dialogue between Christian denominations, and peace in the Middle East.
On his first trip abroad Leo XIV experiences great sympathy. In the confrontation with the reality of war, corruption and discrimination he becomes passionate.
In Lebanon, the Pope waited for the very last moments, Tuesday, December 2, before taking off for Rome, to call for the cessation of the attacks in southern Lebanon, and to imagine "new approaches" to the Middle East. Earlier, during this first international trip, he confirmed a sober style, withdrawal and attention to the local context.
